In the organization of the Joint Commission for Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the UN, UN Women, the Association of Blind Cantons of Sarajevo, I.C. "Lotos" Tuzla and Caritas BiH, on March 9, 2026, a round table was held in the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH called "Almost Invisible: Women with Disabilities on the Margins of Society".
The round table was organized on the occasion of celebrating International Women's Day, with the aim of drawing the attention of the public and decision-makers to the extremely difficult position of women with disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Through this initiative, an institutional and social dialogue was opened on the position of women with disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a special focus on multiple discrimination, access to rights, protection from violence, economic independence and political participation.
During the discussion, it was pointed out that women with disabilities often face double or multiple discrimination - as women and as persons with disabilities. Their experiences and needs are still insufficiently visible in public policies, legislation and support programs.
The round table brought together representatives of the legislative and executive authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, international organizations, embassies, organizations of persons with disabilities and organizations dealing with the protection of women's rights. During the meeting, concrete recommendations were defined for the improvement of public policies related to the rights and position of women with disabilities.
This activity was implemented within the project "Creating policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina while respecting human rights and the rights of persons with disabilities", which implement I.C. "Lotos" Tuzla and the Association of the Blind Canton Sarajevo, with the financial support of the European Union. The activity was also supported by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
