The way we communicate about people with disabilities is not just a matter of language - it is a matter of human rights, dignity and equal participation in society.

Although in Bosnia and Herzegovina the obligations from the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities have been formally assumed, everyday practice shows that stereotypes are still deeply rooted, especially when it comes to women with disabilities. Communication that portrays them as passive, dependent or "objects of care" directly affects their visibility, self-confidence and ability to participate in decision-making.

Through the work of I.C. "Lotos" and the Network of Women with Disabilities, these phenomena are recognized as one of the key obstacles to the realization of rights - from the right to an independent life, to the right to work, education and participation in public life.

That's why we launched an initiative aimed at changing the way of communication as one of the first and most important steps towards real inclusion.

As part of this initiative, an educational video was developed that clearly shows the difference between communication that empowers and that which, often unconsciously, limits through everyday situations.

This initiative has several specific goals:

• improve understanding of dignified and non-discriminatory communication
• reduce the presence of stereotypes in public space and the media
• empower women with disabilities to recognize and demand equal treatment
• encourage institutions, media and citizens to take an active role in changing the narrative

Special focus is placed on women with disabilities due to the multiple discrimination they face - based on gender and disability. Such discrimination often remains invisible, but it has very concrete consequences: from reduced employment opportunities to exclusion from social and political processes.

In accordance with Articles 8 and 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which emphasize awareness raising and the right to live independently and be included in the community, this initiative represents a small but important step towards change – from a pity-based approach to a rights-based approach.

It is important to emphasize that change does not require large resources – but rather a willingness to reexamine our own habits and behavioral patterns.

The way we speak, the questions we ask and the way we offer support directly shape the society in which we live.

Through this initiative, we want to send a clear message: equality begins in everyday communication.
