European Day for Independent Living is celebrated on May 5th and is an annual event that serves to raise awareness of the right to independent living and the importance of independent living for people with disabilities.

Independent living is possible through a combination of environmental and individual factors that enable people with disabilities to have control over their lives. This includes the ability to make their own choices and decide where, with whom and how they live. Services for people with disabilities must be available, accessible to all and provided on an equal opportunity basis, with their free and informed consent, and enable people with disabilities to be flexible and independent in their daily lives.

The focus of this year's Independence Day celebration is freedom.
