A peer meeting for young people with disabilities was held at the Information Center for Persons with Disabilities "Lotos" Tuzla on November 14, 2024. The meeting was attended by 15 participants and the topic was: "Supported Housing". <\/span>At the beginning of the meeting, the young people shared their impressions from their recent visit to the "Duje" center and expressed different feelings, dominated by the fear of being deprived of freedom and control over their own lives. The conversation continued by motivating the participants to think about the possibility of co-housing, where they would have the necessary support of personal assistance. <\/span>It was an opportunity for young people to express their opinions and to recognize the possibility of supported co-housing as a possibility for greater independence and a better quality of life in a community where they will be in control of their decisions and lives. <\/span>Participants expressed their views on the advantages as well as disadvantages of supported housing, with the advantages and recognized benefits leading the way. Common for all present participants is that they are afraid of this kind of change, which would mean leaving the comfort zone they are used to, but they agree that independent life is more difficult, but also more beautiful. <\/span>It was jointly concluded that supported housing brings a more independent life with a sense of community, where personal assistance facilitates daily tasks and provides security. <\/span>Also, participants recognized the idea of supported housing as a space for developing responsibility and making one's own decisions, as well as an opportunity to build friendships and strengthen social skills. <\/span>It was emphasized that independent living also brings important challenges - it requires dedication, responsibility, and willingness to take on the responsibilities that life outside the family brings, and that it is very important to prepare for this important step.<\/span><\/div>\n
At the same time, a meeting of parents of young people with disabilities was held at the restaurant "Citta del sale", which was attended by 7 participants.<\/span><\/div>\n
The meetings were held within the project "Strengthening capacities for independent living of persons with disabilities in BiH", which IC "Lotos" is implementing in partnership with the Center for Independent Living "Stil" from Stockholm, with financial support from MyRight, as well as the Government of the Tuzla Canton.<\/span><\/div>\n
