The activities of our program Empowering Women with Disabilities for Gender Equality address the inequalities of women with disabilities in the women's movement and the disability movement in BiH and relate to networking, training and mentoring. We collaborate with women with disabilities from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, women's organizations and institutions at different levels of government to include diversity and the need to respond to it. Striving to support all our partners in achieving gender equality, with a wonderful and relaxed mood among those present, from December 11 to 13, 2023, at the Terme Ozren Hotel, we held a three-day event talking about experiences, obligations, ethical principles and ways to recognize and include women with disabilities in a relevant way in all actions of organizations and competent bodies for gender equality in BiH.
Our president explains what we are doing to ensure that disability issues are adequately represented in gender relations: “Gender equality is an important component of policies, but also of the real picture and experiences of women with disabilities. Women with disabilities are disenfranchised in various spheres of life, faced with various forms of invisibility and inequality. Their absence is evident in social relations, in the creation of any type of system in which there is no support for this population group. This leads to the formation of relationships that do not recognize the needs of women with disabilities in relation to their role and gender, and to the creation of policies and structures that neglect women with disabilities, both in the disability movement and in the women's movement. That is why we want to improve gender relations, we want to overcome the gap in diversity, and to include the disability perspective in gender equality policies. It is certainly important to directly involve and cooperate with women with disabilities in these processes because they are the best at recognizing their needs and how to respond to them. That is why we have gathered in one place women with disabilities, representatives of organizations and institutions at various levels who are willing to work on the inclusiveness of gender practices and policies. Our goal is "a better quality result of all gender actions and activities".
And the result was achieved during our event. Those present became aware of the need for women with disabilities to be recognized in gender actions. Together with the representatives of organizations and institutions present and women with disabilities, we defined plans and future activities in this field and expanded the network of cooperation of various bodies for the improvement of gender relations in the coming period, which will also include disability issues.
The activities of the three-day event were implemented as part of the project activities of the Information Center for Persons with Disabilities "Lotos" Tuzla as part of the program to empower women with disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
