At the "Salis" hotel in Tuzla, on September 19, 2025, a training session on the topics of independent living and social services was held, gathering 20 participants ready to reflect, share, and enhance the understanding of independent living for people with disabilities.
The training was led by Jamie Bolling, a representative of the European Network for Independent Living (ENIL), who, through an interactive approach, raised questions about disability access, personal assistance, self-confidence, and personal empowerment.
Through conversation, the exchange of experiences, and concrete examples, the participants touched on numerous aspects of everyday life, from the responsibilities and personal roles they take on in the community to the obstacles that society often imposes on them through prejudices and barriers. There was also discussion about the treatment of people with disabilities in history, including shocking practices such as forced sterilization that were carried out as early as the 1970s. Through these examples, it is clear how important the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is and how progress is possible, but still insufficiently present.
It has been concluded that the movement for people with disabilities must continuously advocate, as every political change, every new government, requires a new reminder and struggle for what should be taken for granted – equal human rights for all.
The training was held with the support of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Ministry of Labor, Social Policy, and Return of the Tuzla Canton.
