From October 28 to 30, 2026, in the conference hall of Terme Ozren, the Information Center for People with Disabilities "Lotos" Tuzla conducted a three-day training "Laboratory of independence - from assessment to decision", intended to strengthen the capacity of young people with disabilities to live independently, make decisions and manage their own support.
During three days, through interactive workshops, practical exercises and exchange of experiences, the participants explored what independence means to them, recognized their own potentials and needs, and assessed the level of independence in different areas of everyday life.
A special result of the joint work was the creation of a form for the assessment of independence, a practical tool that will help the participants in identifying priorities, monitoring progress and planning further empowerment. Participants had the opportunity to independently test this tool, simultaneously developing their digital and creative skills.
The third day featured creative drama activities in which three groups of participants presented the everyday challenges of independent living. Through the scenes "Oh, let me do it!", "Who’s the boss here?", and "I want to, but how?", the participants raised important issues—such as the overprotective attitude of those around them, the role of personal assistance, the right to make one's own choices, and the barriers that hinder the equal participation of persons with disabilities in society.
The training resulted in new knowledge, practical tools and concrete plans for the future. It was once again confirmed that independence does not mean life without support, but the right of each person to make decisions and manage their own life, with support that corresponds to their needs and choices..
The activity was realized within the framework of the project "Strengthening the capacity for independent living of persons with disabilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina", with the support of partners STIL, MyRight and Sida.
The Independence Laboratory has concluded, but the process of empowerment, learning, and realizing the right to an independent life continues!
