People with disabilities are one of the poorest categories of citizens and it is estimated that over 80 percent of this population lives in conditions below the poverty line or very close to it. On the occasion of December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Information Center for Persons with Disabilities "Lotos" Tuzla organized a traditional reception on Friday, December 3, at the "Tuzla" hotel. The goal was to present what is being done to improve the living conditions of this category of population.
"There is still a lot of work to do to ensure that people with disabilities, among other things, receive basic means to ensure their own and their families' existence," said the president of the Information Center for People with Disabilities "Lotos" Tuzla, Suvad Zahirović, and added: "The goal is to update the issues on which we want to work with government institutions, as well as to support young people with disabilities so that through education they become capable of independently resolving issues that concern them and other people who need their help in the future." Along with the presentation of the work of organizations of people with disabilities from the Tuzla Canton area, the Information Center for People with Disabilities "Lotos" Tuzla, in partnership with the Association of Citizens Suffering from Dystrophy of the Tuzla Canton, distributed four computers at the reception for children attending educational institutions in the Tuzla Canton area. The computers were received by Amar Duraković from Tuzla, Armin Lugavić from Banovići, Emina and Armina Avdić from Kalesija, and Merima Muminović from Vlasenica.
At the beginning of 2010, at the United Nations High-Level Plenary Meeting, for the purpose of discussing the Millennium Development Goals, Governments confirmed that development policies and actions must also focus on persons with disabilities, so that persons with disabilities also benefit from the progress made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. By resolution of the UN General Assembly, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 3 December 2010, has the theme: "Fulfilling the Promise - Mainstreaming Disability Issues in the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 and Beyond". With this theme, the United Nations wants to remind governments to fulfill their promises to include disability and disability issues in the processes and mechanisms for achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, because if the role of persons with disabilities in society is neglected, then the Millennium Development Goals cannot be fully achieved, and persons with disabilities may be further marginalized in society.
